INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMPLIANCE

Over five years of progressively developing experience in the field of international trade compliance provide me with a thorough understanding on a range the legal pitfalls awaiting an unprepared company on the global stage, including sanctions regimes, antiboycott compliance, classification issues, and licensing.

UNIVERSITY OMBUDSPERSON & STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

After being invited by the deans of Arizona State University's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences to offer my perspective on what could be done with a new position focused on student engagement and problem-solving, I was offered the very position I had described.

RESEARCH CENTER MANAGEMENt & Events Coordination

A role as a student researcher with Arizona State University's diplomatic arm led to a deeper involvement with North American trilateral policy, and the chance to help a new research center get off the ground.

International Trade Associate / Tyco International / August 2012 - March 2013
International Trade Assistant / Tyco International / November 2008 - August 2012

With three roles spanning five-and-a-half years at Tyco, I provided the employees of varied subsidiary companies with vital support on issues of international trade compliance. My responsibilities included:

  • Managing Tyco's Restricted Party Screening (RPS) program, ensuring compliance with government regulations for multiple countries and agencies, including policy definition and targeted program roll-outs.
  • Training hundreds of Tyco employees in-person and over webinar on the proper procedures for screening business partners against RPS lists.
  • Managing Tyco's Antiboycott Compliance program, including the training of employees on "red flag" clauses in contracts, the interpretation of regulations regarding potential boycott language, and the submission of regular quarterly reports to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • Collaborating with teams with diverse and sometimes competing interests, including individuals in Sales, Supply Chain, Licensing, and other teams within the Legal Department.
  • Providing research and drafting support to Tyco's International Trade Counsels, as necessary.

University Ombudsperson & Student Engagement

Student Engagement Coordinator / Arizona State University / September 2007 - July 2008

When deans of Arizona State University's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences called me in to discuss ideas for a new "student-community" position, I assumed they wanted to draw upon my years of experience as a student leader. When they then offered me the position I had just described, I leapt at the chance to help grow a dynamic, engaged community within the university's largest college. While in this role, I:

  • Oversaw student engagement activities for a student population of over 16.000.
  • Resolved student, parent, faculty, and administration concerns in accordance with university policy in an ombudsperson capacity.
  • Managed a carefully selected team of high-performing students, instructing them in leadership techniques via a 1-credit-hour course, and coaching them through projects, from initial planning through fundraising to completion.
  • Coordinated student organizations and developed additional programs for community enrichment.
  • Recruited students through print and online media and live presentations tailored to groups of varying sizes.

As a student and in my first professional role after college, an interdisciplinary focus on international affairs became a defining trait. Whether welcoming government officials, coordinating board meetings, or developing policy proposals, my diverse skillsets and broad scope began here. While in these roles, I:

  • Planned board meetings and center events with participants including CEOs, ambassadors, and other federal, state, and local officials from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
  • Oversaw office operations, including intern staff, financial expenditures, human resources, and travel.
  • Worked with internal and external partners to develop support for programs.
  • Provided editorial oversight for center publications, including the NACTS Quarterly Report.
  • Drafted proposals for establishing university-wide research centers, grant proposals seeking financial support for university initiatives, and memos for distribution to external university partners.
  • Supported the staging of university events involving high-level university officials and foreign dignitaries.
